stormy skies and stormy seas…..
high winds: rough water.
i am waiting for the boat in an echoey and, for the most part, empty ferry terminal. the wind is buffeting the building and the sea, at least the small section that is visible, is noticeably choppy.
the ferry will cross the bay of biscay, a patch of water that is some six miles deep and famed for chucking boats, and their passengers, around. I don’t seem to mind the prospect of this, however, I think perhaps it might be a little comforting to have a tangible and discernable reason for feeling chucked about….
meanwhile, the bike is waiting patiently outside like an old friend.
already, this trip together we have ridden a hundred and seventy miles, most of it on a strong lean into a gusting forty-five mile an hour side wind that, just as we braced ourselves at the right angle, sneaked round to the other side to leap out from the front of a truck or across a bridge bouncing the bike to the other side of the lane while I tried to push down on the right side of the handlebars to bring us round. unsure of riding in such strong winds, I decided to follow, as best i could, some advice I found on the internet . it reads, ‘the bike doesn’t know there’s a cross wind so don’t tell it, for all it knows it could be riding round in a circle!’
nice thought, so i just kept quiet about the weather….
anyways, we are now safely on board and the bike is all tied down, ready for an inevitably lively crossing, down there in the hold. no riding around for 24 hours….. “night night bike.”
so meanwhile, above deck, I’m going to have me a beer!
